Lake Manchester
Mr P and Mr D met at my place and we drove the 45 minutes to Lake Manchester. I first visited the site in 1981 and had last been in 2016. It had never been a top birding site with very little on the lake/reservoir itself and most of the activity in the area below the dam wall – and, of course, around the car park.
And so it proved on this visit. We had a bit of activity before we got to the dam wall and the lake was pretty quiet although we did have an Azure Kingfisher at one point along the bank and a White-bellied Sea Eagle over the water.
Back down below the wall we had a lot of activity in the warming sun – Little Shrikethrush, 2 Rose Robins (one coloured up well), a couple of Weebills, Mistletoebird, Spotted and Striated Pardalotes and a Varied Triller among the more common species.
Back at the car a couple of Little Lorikeets showed quite well, then we took Mr P’s advice and drove a couple of ks further along the road to a culvert over the overflow creek and had a pair of White-eared Monarchs very responsive to a bit of encouragement.
All in all not a bad morning’s birding.
We drove back via Anstead and had breakfast at Westvets beside the Anstead reserve.
